PASTEL: TECHNIQUES IN APPLYING STROKES & COLOR BUILDING STRATEGIES

This workshop will emphasize long-learned ways of applying pastel to pastel paper or board. It will help you achieve rich color and maintain it throughout the painting. Ways of applying strokes such as feathering, scumbling, pointillism, etc. will be tried and then what has been learned will be done on a larger planned painting of a landscape. Bring soft pastels and photo scenes of land or water. U-Art Sanded Pastel Paper (18 by12) is available at $3.50 a sheet. Fee $30.00. Bring a lunch. Register by Monday, March 26.

PASTEL: HOW TO MAKE ANY PASTEL PAINTING WORK

April 3 – Tuesday
9:00 a.m. -3 :00 p.m.
Presenter: Karen Kappell, FSPA For an assured success in pastel painting, we will work on an approach to the painting of any Pastel. We will begin with an underpainting with the pastels which will then be dissolved with denatured alcohol to establish large shape and value areas. Then we will build the pastel painting on this underpainting. Sheets of watercolor paper and denatured alcohol will be provided. Bring soft pastels and photos of landscape with areas easily divided into shape areas. Fee: $30.00. Bring a lunch. Register by Monday, March 26.

PASTEL AND GILDED PAINTING

April 4 -Wednesday
9:00 a.m. – 3 :00 p.m.

Using a combination of pastel,acrylic, gesso, and gilding, we will create a pastel painting that has a metallic glow about it. I suggest the end result be an abstract painting,so that the attention goes to noticing the interesting effects created by this combination of materials.The best surface background and least expensive – is a stretched halfsheet of cold-press water colorpaper. A pastel or hard board painted with gesso would also work. U-Art Sanded Pastel Paper (18 by12) is available at $3.50 a sheet. Bring your supply of soft pastels. Other materials will be provided. We are neither unusual nor alone if we find ourselves wrestling (struggling) with God. Some well-known and some not-so-well-known biblical women also wrestled with God. We’ll explore and learn from their stories, share some of our own, and grow is faith and wisdom together. Suggested offering $10.00. Register by Friday, March 30.

We will examine some of Richard Rohr’s sense of the second half of life found in “Falling Upward.” What are some of the ways to keep open to the new, and the more? Richard Rohr’s book is not necessary but helpful. Suggested offering $10.00. Register by Friday, April 13.

SPRINGTIME SHINRIN-YOKU

If you like walking slowly, touching, looking and listening, discovering and wondering, you will like the Japanese approach to being in a forest. MINI-CAMINO

April 20 – Friday

In April 2017, Sister Julia walked over 80 miles in five days on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. This day will begin with her sharing a bit of her experience and then we will head out for our own pilgrimage in the woods, walking at least five miles together no matter the weather, aiming to open ourselves to the sacredness found in the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other. Dress for hiking and bring your lunch and water. Suggested offering $20.00. Register by Thursday, April 19.

FRANCISCAN DAY OF SOLITUDE

April 21 – Saturday
8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Facilitators: Pat Pintens and Julia Walsh, FSPA
Since the 1200s Franciscans have been spending time in sacred solitude to listen to the voice of God. Come away to pause, reflect, recharge, spend time alone with God to listen for God’s voice and rest in God’s presence. Participants will gather briefly to begin and end the day in prayer. The remainder of the day is on your own. You will have a private room, a simple meal at noon, plus an opportunity for a massage or to meet with a spiritual director. WRITERS GROUP
