Saving and Restoring Whites in Watercolor with Sr. Karen Kappell
TIME: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
LOCATION: Marywood Franciscan Spirituality Center
INVESTMENT: $45 each day or $200 for the week; cabin rooms available for $55 per night
This week of watercolor we will concentrate on a number of ways to keep whites and lights in watercolor paintings. Because of the transparency of watercolor, learning to do this can greatly enhance paintings and create a luminous feel to the painting. We will also use white from other media to work with watercolor paints to lighten or restore some white. Bring watercolors, 1/2 sheets of 140# watercolor cold press paper and watercolor supplies.
Bring a lunch and related photos for each day if you are not registered for the week and in a cabin.
Saving Whites by Blocking Out (May 26 and 27 9am-3pm): Plants/ trees touched by a frost/ light snow might seem hard to paint but by using a block out technique it becomes easier to create the effect. Florals with light edging can also be a good subject choice. Block out will be provided. Bring watercolors, a 1/2 sheet of 140# watercolor cold press paper and watercolor supplies and scrap sheets for experimentation.
Recovering Lost Whites and Adding White to Watercolors (May 28-30 9am-3pm): Lost whites can be recovered in a number of ways with an opaque medium such as gesso, white pastels, gouache, acrylics. Cascading streams, waterfalls, and foaming water, work particularly well in cases where it is hard to retain whites. Bring watercolors, 1/2 sheets of 140# watercolor cold press paper and watercolor supplies. Gesso and other whites will be provided.
