Express Yourself and Transform with Ecstatic Dance
TIME: 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
LOCATION: Marywood Franciscan Spirituality Center
INVESTMENT: $20 for adults, free-will offering for children
Ecstatic dance is free-form dance practice that serves as an opportunity for dancers to connect with themselves, release endorphins, create a mind-body-soul connection, and cope with stress. Ecstatic Dance employs EDM or electronic dance music. It focuses on the rise and fall of tempo, changes in rhythm, and utilizing silence to give the dancers a wide spectrum for exploring dance and the sensations that arise in their body during the experience.
We will begin with an opening circle which invites participants to become familiar with the rules of ecstatic dance, ease into the space, and set collective/individual intentions.
Rules are in place to ensure a safe space of respect, consent, and non-judgement.
1. Be sober
2. Be silent on the dance floor unless there is an emergency
3. Phones or cameras will be absent
4. Respect everyone’s personal space
5. Dance barefoot unless shoes are medically necessary
6. You must participate. This is not a performance, but a sacred gathering for people to feel safe and connect deeper into the energy of the dance without fear of judgment or being perceived. You may leave the dance floor for breaks as needed
There will be a rest spot with chairs or cushions and water for dancers who need to take a break from the dance. Bringing your own water bottle is encouraged! A natural stillness will arise when dancers have finished and are all choosing to rest. Once this happens, we will form our closing circle to end the dance. Dancers may utilize this space to share their experiences during the dance.
This is a family friendly event! Children are natural dancers and usually help some of the adults to loosen up!
No experience necessary! Come as you are, ready to move and feel. All body types, ages, and mobility are welcome.
