Chip Carving
TIME: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
LOCATION: Marywood Franciscan Spirituality Center
INVESTMENT: $200; Cabin rooms available $55/night
Discover the timeless art of chip carving in this hands-on two-day workshop, September 11 and 12 from 9am-3pm, led by certified instructor Todd Blachier. Chip carving is a traditional form of woodworking that dates back centuries and has experienced a modern revival in the United States over the past 50 years.
Using just a single knife and a pattern, you’ll learn how to “chip out” beautiful, intricate designs from wood—a process Todd describes as a meditative, creative experience. All supplies are included, and knives or project kits will be available for purchase if you’d like to continue carving at home.
Todd brings 15 years of carving experience and a warm, engaging teaching style. Originally from Louisiana, Todd lived in Wausau for 13 years and, along with his wife Marilyn, enjoyed many retreats at Marywood before returning south. Expect not only expert instruction but also a few great stories along the way!
No experience necessary—just bring your curiosity and willingness to learn. By the end of the workshop, you’ll take home your very own hand-carved ornament and have a new base of knowledge to chip carve at your leisure.
