Register by August 12 by calling Marywood @ (715) 385-3750 or emailing marywood.center@gmail.com
Glycerin Soap Making – 10am
Treat yourself or someone special to the gift of handmade glycerin soap. Soap made from glycerin is mild and moisturizing, and comes from the coconut plant. Participants will melt the glycerin and choose a mold, color and scent to add to the clear glycerin soap base, and then wrap or package the finished product to take home. Joan Meeder of Three Lakes, Wisconsin will lead this “good, clean fun” workshop.
Home Composting – 11am
Come and learn the ins and outs of composting your food scraps and yard waste to create a valuable soil amendment for your gardens and plants. Composting is a valuable practice in protecting the environment. It’s estimated that between 1/3 and 1/2 of all materials going into landfills could be turned into compost. Once in landfills, food scraps and other compostables generate a methane gas that is many times more harmful than CO2. Compost has numerous advantages in improving your soils and, by extension, enhancing the nutritional value of your garden vegetables. Come and learn about the materials suitable for composting and the various options that are available to those wanting to do composting on any scale.
The workshop will be presented by Don Meeder, President of the Three Lakes Lions Scrappers Branch Club, a coalition of farmers, gardeners, and individuals committed to promoting compost practices and local food sourcing.
Lunch – Noon Included with full day registration
Homemade Yogurt – 1pm
Tickle your taste buds, enhance your gut health, and reduce plastic waste with yogurt that you make yourself! Holistic nurse Wendie Libert, DNP, RN, will lead your through the steps to safely create wholesome, delicious yogurt. Participants will each prepare a jar of cultured milk to finish incubating at home.
Herbalism Basics – 2pm
Do you know mullein is a fine medicinal for the lungs, even when you smoke it? Or that you can relieve the pain of ear infections with its flowers? Ever used yarrow to stop a nose bleed? Or crushed jewelweed into your skin to stop the itch of poison ivy? Can you identify the plant commonly known as the “band-aid” plant? It grows on most well-worn paths. There’s medicine all around, just waiting for you to discover it. Come join budding herbalist, Merrie Beckman, on an adventure into the open spaces around Marywood to introduce you to the basics of herbalism. You’ll learn to identify some amazing plants, learn about their medicinal uses, and appropriate preparation of them for personal medicinal use. Merrie will bring herbal samples from her apothecary for show and tell and will provide handout instructions on how you can make your own tinctures and healing balms.
