Writing Your Growing Edge : A Writers Retreat

DATE: June 1 - 6, 2024
TIME: 3:00 pm - 12:00 pm
LOCATION: Marywood Franciscan Spirituality Center
INVESTMENT: $700 Resident (private bedroom in shared cabin) $480 Commuter

The “growing edge” is an element of the experience of summer, which moves us from the messy, turbulent new life of spring to its culmination in fruiting and ripening as the harvest approaches. It is also an important aspect of our growth as writers as we connect with what is germinating in the moment and the fruit that comes of writing in community.

Join writer Monica Lobenstein, author and kayak retreat facilitator Mary Ann Smrz, and copywriter Amanda Cowart for a six-day retreat during which we’ll explore innovative strategies for deepening our writing. Plenty of writing time, networking with other writers, and the inspiration of Trout Lake and the majestic forest at Marywood provide fertile ground for our writer’s soul!

Retreat begins at 3pm Saturday, June 1 and goes through noon Thursday, June 6, 2024

Schedule of Events

Saturday, June 1
Shoots and Sparks of Creativity

What better way to begin a creative expression retreat than to ground yourself in real dirt and tend new shoots of young plants? Then we’ll end the evening around the pine-scented sparks and glowing embers of a lakeside fire.

Sunday, June 2
Practicing Presence in our Writing

Whether you write for yourself or for your readers, practicing with presence can enrich the way you view the world and put it to paper. Monica Lobenstein will lead participants as they explore this practice and share insights that arise during their experience.

Monday, June 3
Change Your Mind Without Losing It: How to Navigate a Genre Change

Amanda Cowart has worked as a professional copywriter since 2018, but is ready to put her writing skills to new tests as a children’s book author. During this session, uncover the secret idea(s) hidden within you and gain inspiration for your next project.

Tuesday, June 4
Kreative Kayaking…Unlocking the Writer’s Block

Join Mary Anne Smrz for 2 hours of peaceful reflective time, and an opportunity to let your creativity flow. Lovely rituals and a unique writing prompt are just a few of the gifts you will receive on the magical waters of Trout Lake.

Wednesday, June 5
Writing in Community

How might sharing insights with other writers influence, deepen, and strengthen our individual understandings and shape your perspectives and written words? Experience writing individually and in community under the guidance of Monica Lobenstein, exploring how weaving and braiding ideas together with others can deepen your writing experience.

Thursday, June 6
Writers’ Wisdom Circle

Participants will “write” their own round table discussion with the presenters and one another. Bring your questions and share your experiences with writing and getting your words out to the world.
