WHAT’S WRONG WITH BEING PERFECT?

While perfectionists may not know how to answer that question, they sure know the struggle of trying to be perfect. WORDS AND SPIRIT: POETRY WORKSHOP

HOLY FAMILY NATIVITY SCENE PAINTING

This program will provide an opportunity for you to consider the holiness experienced within your family life. You will work together to paint simple statues of Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus that you can display in your home during this Christmas season. MIXED MEDIA: Iridescent and Metallic Glow with Watercolor

October 2 – Monday

Using pouring, blending, and dripping techniques we will create abstract paintings with a strong focal area. Iridescent and metallic colors will then be added. The purpose is to figure out how these metallics can interact and enhance an idea and then possibly be used to push your painting to a new level. Bring a stretched half sheet of watercolor paper and watercolor supplies. Other materials will be provided. Fee: $30.00. Bring a bag lunch. Register by Monday, September 25.

WATERCOLOR: Painting with a Large Brush

October 3 – Tuesday

One of the best ways to get a dramatic look to a painting is by using a large brush to apply the paint. Because one is concentrating on the large brush strokes the painting develops quickly. The subject can be suggested earlier with a light pencil sketch of the main shape areas. You will need to bring a stretched half sheet of 140# cold press watercolor paper or 300# sheet of cold press paper. A half sheet is about 15×22 inches. Also bring a 1-1/2 or 2-inch flat brush, watercolors and your usual watercolor supplies. Since a large brush is relative to the size of the paper, you can bring smaller 11×15-inch sheets and brushes that are as above or a little smaller. Fee: $30.00. Bring a bag lunch. Yet author, religion professor and Episcopal priest, Barbara Brown Taylor suggests deliberately getting lost is a good spiritual practice. Using quality pastels allows you to create wonderful, colorful paintings. We will paint with them to create 16×20-inch paintings of the subject, similar to the pastel pictured. Bring soft pastels and pastel supplies if you have them. If you are a beginner, some general supplies are available. RETREAT: THE SACRED GIFT OF LISTENING

The gift of listening is a key to cultivating peace in our relationships and, hence, peace in our world. Besides “listening beyond words,” we will examine ways to be more specific in how we connect and engage with God and with another as gift to the “other.” Each morning includes a presentation and communal prayer. Afternoons will be free for rest and to explore listening. After the evening meal there will be sharing and communal prayer. Spiritual direction will be available if desired as part of the retreat. Fee: $375 residents includes all needs and a private room in a shared lakeside cabin. Include a $100 deposit (refundable if reservation is cancelled by August 20). Commuters $175 (deposit $50). WATERCOLORS ON YUPO

August 3 – Thursday: Mixed Media on Yupo (bring your watercolor supplies)
Yupo (provided) is an ultra smooth, acid free synthetic paper with a velvety smooth surface that takes pen, ink, pencil and marker. As a watercolor paper the unique advantage and challenge is its non-absorbent surface that makes color sit on top. Because the colors stay on top when they are dry, they remain more brilliant than standard watercolor paper. These three programs in August will work with Yupo in a variety of ways. Each program is independent of the other so you can attend one, two or all three. Each program runs from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Fee: $30.00 for each program. Bring a lunch each day. SHINRIN-YOKU (Forest Bathing)
August 11 – Friday 8:00-11:00 a.m.

“Forest bathing” is a Japanese approach to walking in the forest. It is a slow, deliberate immersion in nature. Come bathe yourself in a northern forest. Dress comfortably. DRUM MAKING WORKSHOP

Drum maker Wayne Manthey has helped bring many drums to life all over the country. Participants use wood, deer hides, walnut stain and other natural elements to create a unique, personal drum. There is time for reflection and storytelling about the ancient spiritual tradition of drumming. Participants will go home with a homemade drum, drumstick, and rattle.

Objective truth, subjective truth, post-truth and alternative facts: discerning fact from fiction can be increasingly complex in today’s society. Yet, part of Gospel living is knowing and sharing The Truth, another name for Jesus Christ. Many of us are in relationship with those who believe and think differently than we do. BLESSING BOWLS

Cereal, soup, salad or emptiness, bowls hold many things that can become blessings unto us, nourishing our bodies and souls. How can the emptiness, openness and possibilities of bowls speak to us of how we are to be in relationship of God and one another? How can bowls become instruments for blessing? THE GREENING POWER OF GOD

Keeping strong colors in watercolors can be a challenge and in this class we will learn one way of creating bold and vibrant watercolor paintings. Using a palette knife, as well as a brush, we will creatively work on distribution of color with watercolor media, practice some techniques, and then apply them to a painting. You will learn to use a palette knife in two ways: to add or subtract. A modern version of the Prayer of St. Francis has been illustrated through a beautiful path in the wooded area behind Holy Family Church. PASTEL: Combination of Gouache and Pastel in Landscape
July 5 – Tuesday

Using gouache mixed with fluid acrylics (provided) we will create an underpainting of a landscape that will be developed further with dry pastels. Bring landscape photos that have dramatic skies and articulated foregrounds that are not silhouetted. MIXED MEDIA: Ink & Watercolor

Learn and experience in painting the difference between watercolor and inks. Note how both can be used in a painting that combines the fineness of line with the brilliance of color. The purpose of this workshop is to create a warm-up sheet of textures that provide experimentation with water based paints that can be used in future paintings or be developed into an abstract painting. Jeanine Laibly: The Ukrainian Egg, a Symbol of Christian Belief – The word pysanka translates into “writing on an egg.” It is a symbolic “code,” a drawing which has Christian motifs. The Easter egg became a symbol of the tomb out of which Jesus came forth to the new life of His resurrection – a symbol of the resurrected God.
Betsy Schussler: Become aware of your inner being as you experience gentle movement. Allow the breath of life to gently flow through your body as you renew your kinship with self and the environment that surrounds you.
Naomi Bruesehoff: Create a circle of beads that you can use in praying for yourself, your neighbors, and the world. Together we will experience several prayer practices.

CRAFT: ALTERING PAPER -FORMING A PAPER VESSEL
June 6 – Monday

This is a two-day workshop. Monday we will create color sheets of paper to be used for collage using fluid acrylics, watercolors, and gels. After these sheets have dried we will form bowls which need to dry overnight. We will use some of the remaining sheets to create a collage painting. Bring a canvas or stretched watercolor sheet on which to apply collage, white glue like Elmers (not school quality), scissors, and water colors. On day two we will finish off the bowls and paintings. Wear painting clothes and bring a lunch for the first day. You will have plenty of sheets to take home and use for further projects. Fee: $30.00; bring a lunch. Register by Wednesday, June 1.

“CARE OF OUR COMMON HOME” – A morning at Kemp Natural Resources Station

Come to experience some of the last remnants of old-growth forest in northern Wisconsin. Let’s walk the land, hear the stories and reflect on the fragility of the resources around us. Watercolor

Enhancing Watercolor Painting with Negative Painting

Monday, May 2 – 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.

Presenter: Karen Kappell, FSPA

One of the most difficult concepts to grasp in watercolor painting is negative painting (painting the space around something to articulate the form). In traditional watercolor it is beneficial to learn how to see this way and in this workshop we will concentrate on developing the ability to do so. Bring 8×10 inch sheets of 140# paper, brushes, and watercolor paints. You could also bring an unfinished watercolor painting that is subdued in color that could be finished with negative painting.

Mary: Let’s Look Again

Craft/Art: Image Transfer

Using a natural cleaner called Citra Solv, we will transform images of magazine pages into papers that stir the imagination and produce pages that are usable in a number of ways. You will need to bring an older issue of National Geographic Magazine (the printing ink used is right for the process), one that has rich colored photos in it, a glass container, watercolor paper 11×14-in., a cheap 2-in. foam brush, paper towels and some elders glue.
